Risk Assessing Recreation (Exploration) Core Activity -

For Recreation (Exploration) groups running regular trips across the UK for their high-risk core activity, we have a dedicated process for streamlining the risk assessment process.

What is core activity, and how is it risk assessed?

Core activity is the activity which clubs/societies deliver regularly, and which is reflected in their constitution. All clubs and societies are required to annually risk assess their core activity, via the Core Activity Risk Assessment.

Recreation (Exploration) core activity typically involves regular trips across the UK that the Union must be informed about to ensure accurate support, as well as maintaining appropriate health and safety monitoring. To prevent Recreation (Exploration) groups from having to submit a full Activity Proposal for every core activity trip, we have developed the following process:

Recreation (Exploration) Core Activity UK Trips Process

  1. Core activity risk assessment submitted to Activities Team over summer, according to risk rating requirement
  2. Core risk assessment reviewed by Activities Team
  3. Trip proposal submitted ad hoc per trip, minimum 10 days before activity, including IC Union route information and attendees list
  4. Trip proposal reviewed by Activities Team

Documentation required for Recreation (Exploration) Core Activity UK Trips

  • Core risk assessment, submitted according to risk rating requirement
    • Including review of:
      • activity
      • all types of accommodation that could be used

  • Activity proposal form
    • Activity Type: UK Day Trip / UK Overnight Trip
